The Wisdom of Children
This year we have been free to choose (or not) to give up something we value for Lent in order to devote that time to prayer, and reflection on our sinfulness and the great sacrifice Christ made on our behalf.
The younger children and I discussed the various choices and discussed why "vegetables" or "homework" were not suitable. I have chosen a fairly straighforward, standard choice--sweets. No desserts or sweet snacks (with the exception of sugar in my tea) for me. The first real temptation to give in came on Monday evening when someone brought a lemon meringue pie to the St. Stephen's women's meeting at which I was speaking.
But, the choice made by Jesse is, by far, the wisest and most spiritually beneficial "giving up for Lent" that I have ever heard of. He decided to give up talking. Now this is not an absolute vow of silence. He has devoted only a small portion of time each day to silence--the time spent traveling to school each morning. His reasoning? Giving up talking will help him say fewer bad words. But, the benefit has extended to the rest of us as well. The others are generally silent for the trip, too, and I use the time for prayer.
"...and a little child shall lead them." Thank You, Lord, for the things You reveal to young children.
